Good projectors actually available here

I can't believe this is so difficult. Normally I'd read some reviews, choose a product, and hit pricespy or go to a retail store to purchase. But it seems when it comes to projectors, NZ is about 3 years behind the rest of the world, and for some reason, most retailers seem to think it's OK to triple the price. Niche market I guess. And of course, being at the ends of the earth as we are, nobody has anything set up for actual in person comparisons, so I'm reliant on reviews, usually from overseas.

So here's what I'm left with:

1) Take what I'm given. Buy a 3 year old, overpriced known-brand projector, but yeah, at least it'll have an NZ warrantee.

2) Order a newer one cheaper from a trusted online retailer overseas, add extortionate taxes, inspection fees and delivery and if something goes wrong, it might be a battle.

3) Throw caution to the wind, choose a Chinese projector, maybe avoid extortionate taxes maybe not, and just don't even bother if anything goes wrong. But at least they're up-to-date, and cheap.

My current setup is a 720p Panasonic, it's not bad but the throw means I can't quite get the size I want, the bulb's getting on, it's a bit noisy, and new projectors are HD and beyond.

The BenQ 1070W gets great reviews. Should be just over $1k but nobody seems to have them here.

Xiaomi does that short throw laser - seems good for $2.5k but not sure I need short throw.

Xiaomi also does a compact DLP for $1k.

A quiet projector would be nice. Under $2k. Don't need 4k. And my room is dark/purpose built.

Thoughts?
