Best video player for uhd mkv’s

Hi all, I'm just wondering what you would recommend for playing UHD 4K h265 HDR mkv's with atmos. We have a file server that we use for streaming to Plex (Apple tv4) and 2 kodi clients (RPI 3's). We were hoping the new Apple TV but it doesn't look like it supports auto refresh rate switching or atmos. What would everyone recommend?

TV recommendations~$1,000

Hey team.

I'm after some recommendations for a replacement tv at around $1000.

My current ~4 year old Sony Bravia has been going strong but has now been water damaged by my 5 year old.

I haven't really been keeping an eye on what's out there, but from my first look I've found these:

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/TVSAM36140/Samsung-40MU6100-40-UHD-4K-Flat-Smart-TV--HDR--Blu

https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/televisions/televisions/full-hd-hd-televisions/49-59-hd-tvs/panasonic-th-49e400z-49-full-hd-led-television/prod173605.html

https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/p/hitachi-49-inch-4k-ultra-hd-hdr-smart-tv/R2378611.html

I won't really need a Smart/Android Tv as I have a Roku box all set up and it's doing all I need it to.

Any advice is appreciated!

How can I stream video from my Laptop - TV?

Hi.

I want to watch movies from my Laptop and stream them on my TV, without using a HDMI cable (Unless there is a way to stream it and be able to work on my laptop while still showing the video on my TV?). I can stream it using "Film & TV" (Inbuilt Windows app), however sometimes the audio is really quite, where as with VLC its a good volume.

I do have a Chromecast somewhere, just need to find it. I have read though that VLC doesn't support Chromecast yet though.

Thanks

Can you hack a non-Android TV?

Hi, Can you hack a non-Android Sony TV? Yesterday, I purchased the KD49X7000E for a great price, through work ($860 incl. 3 years warranty). Same TV as this one. https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/televisions/televisions/ultra-hd-4k-televisions/49-59-uhd-tvs/sony-kd49x7000e-49-ultra-hd-4k-hdr-smart-television/prod152670.html It doesn't come with Android, but still has Netflix and YouTube. I also have an Android box connected to the TV anyway. So can you do anything to this TV? I've seen videos on YouTube, where people can hack their Android TV. I'm just curious. Might not necessarily want to play around with it, but I've always been keen on understanding what I can do with the technology I own (when I had an iPhone, the first thing I did was to jailbreak it).

Has anyone had success getting a Logitech Harmony 650 remote with a Dish TV T1050?

I can get it to power up and change channels etc, but I can't get into the Library settings to watch recordings, which makes it pretty much useless.

no sound from denon receiver using netflix through LG tv

hello,

massively frustrated here. Have connected my Denon AVR-1713 to my 65in LG smart tv. I have sound through the receiver when using blu ray speaker but cannot for the life of me get tv sound via Netflix ( note, have not yet hooked up to aerial to see whether terrestial tv works, but i am presuming not )

TV is LG 65UF850T

When the tv turns on, it now powers on the Denon automatically, which it wasnt earlier in the evening when setting up, so i thought i was getting somewhere. The receiver used to work with an older tv set up used up until last week, so there is no issues with the receiver. The TV internal speakers work, and as mentioned , when using blu ray, it all goes well so the hardware is not the issue, just my setup

On working through the tv settings i have selected Audio OUt HDMI ARC and turned Smartlink on

I am completely bamboozled !!! Any geniuses out there ???

Veon 4K TV and Xbox One X

I picked up a 55" Veon 4K TV (V55UHDS) for $799 last year to get ready for a 4K console that I knew would come out eventually.

Fast forward to yesterday when I purchased an Xbox One X, took it home and connected it to HDMI port 4 (2.0) which says in the manual displays 4k at 60fps.

The display flicks back and forth and never stays at the resolution.

Have read some forums and can see similar issues with the Xbox One S and curious to see if anyone found a resolution? I'm guessing it's done to something not being supported on the TV but then why say it's 4K if it can't output 4K.

I took the TV back to Warehouse today and they are sending it off for repair but who knows what will happen.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

NVIDIA Shield

I'm looking at a Nvidia Shield on Amazon - link here

Questions:

1. Will this be able to replace my WDTV Live for playing video files from a Synology NAS?

2. Given I already have Netflix and Lightbox on my Panasonic OLED, what else can the Nvidia offer me for streaming options or other useful services or functionality?

Question for Panasonic OLED owners - has anyone used the Panel Maintenance function yet?

The Panel Maintenance settings says that a white line will appear on the screen during the 80 min process - yet, my screen remains blank - no white lines, nothing - so not sure if this is not working properly on my set??

Advice re Faulty Samsung LED TV

Hi Guys

Firstly, apologies for my first ever post here being me asking for help, but this seemed like such a great place to get it!

Anyway, in July of 2016 I purchased a 60" 4K LED Smart TV (UA60JS7200) from Harvey Norman. The TV has started developing a backlight fault where the top half of the screen will stay dark. I say developing because it does seem to come right after a few minutes - but in the last week of so if this fault showing it has been taking longer and longer to come right. I will attach a photo at the bottom of this post for anyone interested.

I contacted Samsung just a few minutes ago who lodged a repair request with a service agent in Christchurch but informed me that the repair would be fully at my cost as it is out of a 1 year warranty.

So my questions are: - Has anyone encountered a similar fault in similar Samsung models which might indicate manufactures defects?- Has anyone got experience with the consumer guarantees act which would get me off paying what will probably be a very large repair bill, as a 15ish month life is appalling for a TV with a RRP of $4000.

Thanks in advance for any advice, obviously I'm not super happy at the moment!

Brateck projector screens, any good?

Hello,

Does anyone have experience with Brateck projector screens? Specifically their deluxe tab-tensioned electric models.

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MOABRA0118/Brateck-108-Deluxe-Tab-tensioned-Electric-Projecto

I can find very little in the way of reviews. On paper the specs appear similar to other screens that cost twice as much.

Gain: 1.2

Screen Ratio: 16:9

Aluminum housing

Superior tubular motor

Infrared (IR) remote control

Standard 4-side black masking borders

High quality fibreglass matte white material

Floating installation brackets for easy alignment

Tab-tensioned design makes the surface perfectly flat

Black backed screen material eliminates light penetration for superior colour reproduction

Thanks!

p.s. according to my profile I haven't posted to this forum for over 10 years!

Google Assistant has gone from my Shield TV !

After the recent update I have had Google Assistant working fine on my Shield TV. There was an icon on the home screen to toggle it on/off and the "Ok Google" phrase was easily picked up by the controller.

A few days ago the on/off icon disappeared and Assistant now only works if I press the mic button on the remote or the controller, the OK Google command is no longer picked up.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

TV's: Samsung vs. TCL or something else?

Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying a new TV (65" if possible) and am having trouble deciding between a Samsung MU7000 and the new TCL X2. My budget is $4k absolute max (which is why I'm deciding between a 4k tv and a QLED one - they're roughly the same price).

Having read several of the threads on this forum about TV recommendations, no-one seems to like Samsungs. Having no experience with their TV's, can someone explain why this is? I love how they look in the shop; the overall picture quality looks way better than the other brands to me. I know many people seem to prefer Sony, but I hate how they look in the shop as they seem really dim to me. I currently have an older Panasonic, which I hate as every time there's a dark scene the screen dims even further, so I end up having to keep a menu bar open to keep the picture from going too dark. Hence not a fan of Panasonic! I've never used or owned anything LG before, but again when looking at them in-store the Samsungs look better plus they look a bit basic with the apps they offer, but if anyone wants to convince me otherwise go ahead :)

The TCL X2's look good in-store, but still not quite as good as the Samsungs (even the 4k ones, although I'm not an expert on exactly what to look for while watching). My question is: even though this is QLED, would this beat out the MU7000 as it is (to quote the sales guy) a 'cheaper brand'?

Another consideration is with the Samsung I would have to also buy a soundbar and potentially an nvidia Shield TV box, whereas the TCL has a good soundbar built-in, according to reviews, and it has Android TV also built-in. I don't currently use many streaming services but would like to get into using Kodi etc... With those add-ons, it stretches up just past my budget, although that might come down with black Friday and Boxing Day coming up. Only other option there is to drop down to a 55" 4k and given the TV will be about 5m from the couch, I think that might end up being a bit small, although do-able if it's worth sacrificing the size for quality.

HDMI over Ethernet

I have been experimenting with a pair of TX/RX HDMI/RJ45 adapters.

Using a laptop, the adapters, and 2 metres of CATe5 I can get picture and sound to a big TV.

When I try to get the signal over another network cable of about 5 metres and a wall patch panel, the TV recognises that an HDMI cable is attached, but no picture/sound.

I'm thinking that the extra length and connector is depleting the signal strength, so wondering if powered HDMI extenders would do the trick?

Views or opinions please.

55” 4K Veon Television - Gaming Input Lag?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at buy a 55" 4K Veon TV as well as a Playstion 4 Pro as an early Xmas present to myself.

I've owned a smaller Veon TV about a year ago and I recall there being a little bit of input lag when playing on my PS4.

Does anyone own a 4K Veon TV and game with it? What are your experiences with it and would you recommend the TV?

Thanks in advance,

James

Despite privacy and cost fears, The US backs next-generation TV standards

http://deadline.com/2017/11/despite-privacy-cost-fears-fcc-backs-next-generation-tv-standards-1202210002/

Despite sharp dissent from its two Democratic commissioners and concern from activists over privacy and costs, the FCC voted 3-2 to endorse Next-Generation TV, a set of standards known as ATSC 3.0 viewed by proponents as the gateway to a bold new era for video's legacy players

..."This is precisely the kind of technical innovation that the FCC should champion," said Ajit Pai, chairman of the Republican-controlled FCC.

...In her strongly worded dissent, commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel said the standards offer "no benefit to consumers" and in fact are "a tax on every household with a TV" given new equipment expenses. Nothing but corporate interests are prompting the changes, she added. "We don't have a Congressional mandate – we have unelected FCC officials."

..."Sinclair Broadcast Group has boasted that the new ATSC 3.0 standard will give them detailed information about consumer viewing habits that they can then sell to advertisers. They have also boasted about the patent royalties they will collect. Despite this, the FCC Order does nothing to protect consumer privacy or protect consumers from the extra costs this transition will impose."
